Publish date: 2024-05-16

Australian actress Ruby Rose, best known for her role as prison inmate Stella on Orange is the New Black, is speaking out about her bout with depression and urging others also struggling to get help.

Three years ago, the model/actress/DJ extraordinaire, who, at the time, hadn’t achieved international fame, was fighting to overcome depression. On March 31, 2013, she sent this tweet:

“It is with great sadness that despite everything I have tried in the short time I was given I am still losing my battle with depression.”

The tweet, which she had likely forgotten about, resurfaced this weekend when a fan sent it to her.

Ruby then reposted the tweet, adding the caption, “a fan just sent this..Almost 3 years to the day. I have no words for how thankful I am I turned my life around..” She then explained that the three-year old tweet came just after she’d left her home country and took 6 months off to focus on herself.

Minding the Twitter character limit, Ruby ventured to Instagram. There she posted the tweet in a picture and left a rather lengthy, but incredibly powerful message about her experience as the caption. She explained that during that time in her life, she had abruptly left Australia for the States to check herself into intensive therapy in Santa Monica. Ruby’s testimonial message, in part, said:

“I had hit rock bottom.. I couldn’t find happiness anywhere except my dogs face and even that wasn’t enough. I thought I had failed at being a human being an adult.”

And near the end of the message, Ruby was clearly overwhelmed with a sense of melancholy for what she had gone through and a sense of gratitude for the fact that she is in a much better place now. In conclusion, Ruby wrote:

“I’m just reflective because I chose to fight and I thought it meant I’d be able to live. I DIDNT think it meant that I’d be able to live my dream. I DIDNT think it would result in this extraordinary life I get to be a part of now… It just makes me wonder how many others are days, hours, seconds away from realizing their worth.. Their potential.. And once the dark cloud is lifted will be truly happy and free.. #wealldeservetobehere #wealldeservetobehappy.”

There has been an outpour of appreciation for her candid message from Ruby’s followers. Many have thanked her, saying that she inspires them to fight through their own battle with depression.

Lastly, Ruby sent a final assurance to her fans, saying:

“Sending love and light to everyone who feels down right now, in a funk.. Alone.. Not worthy.. We ALL deserve to be here. You are worthy.”
